Definition of Family Values

Our definition of family values was given to us through building blocks, placed one by one by our parents or legal guardians, society, culture, and religious beliefs.  That means that those who grow up in dysfunction, surrounded by turmoil and addiction, may well carry those learned behaviors into their own family structure and parenting.

It also means that our definitions can vary drastically, whether right, wrong or indifferent.  These variations can cause friction in the young family who is just developing their own method of parenting and setting the basis for their marriage.  You can obtain peace in your parenting, by getting a new definition of family values!

Most young parents have already decided they want their children to have a better childhood than their own and most want to do things their way.  Try starting fresh with a new definition of family values.

Consider God as Father.  He raised the only perfect son.  If you want your children to walk on water, rather than just treading it throughout their lives, you'll need to get to know Him.  Learn the importance of a spiritual life, versus a religious one.  Go beyond church.

Love each other.  Forgive and forget.  Your children are watching you.  Somebody goofed?  There is healing for that.

Parent based on a relationship with God.  Look for His advice and avoid patterning your life after others who could be mistaken.

Family values vary based on culture and spiritual beliefs.  There seems to be one common denominator and that is the child.  The family structure must become strong enough to produce strong, healthy children.  That would certainly build a better future.

You can examine your own family values by jotting down your beliefs on these key components.  Prayerfully define each aspect of your life and prioritize them according to your own beliefs.

  • Marriage

  • Parenting

  • Structure

  • Spirituality

  • Education

  • Occupation

  • Finances

Food for Thought:

If I could change the way I raised my child I certainly would!  She would have had a little less face washing and a lot more hugs and kisses!  She would have had a mother who took better care of herself!  She would have had more peace and less friction!

She would have had more
prayers at bedtime!
